We’ve all been there where we’ve acknowledged that our makeup collection has gotten out of hand. Either you’ve realized that you have five different lipsticks or nail polishes that are in the exact same shade, or you’ve noticed that your skin is starting to break out from using the same foundation that you’ve had since high school prom. Some may call it hoarding, while others, like myself, attribute this affection as a loving relationship that we don’t want to depart. If you are experiencing these feelings towards your products, that’s a good sign that it’s time to say a loving goodbye. Here are three signs that it’s time to downsize your makeup collection.

Your makeup has reached its expiration date.

Chances are some of the things in your makeup bag have reached their expiration dates. If you can’t remember when you bought it, throw it away. Here is a helpful guide on deciding when you should toss your products

  • Eyeliner — 6 months to 1 year
  • Mascara — 3 to 6 months
  • Blush, eye shadow, powder cosmetics — 1 to 2 years
  • Foundation— 6 months to 2 years
  • Lipstick — 2 years
  • Natural products — 3 to 6 months

You’re not showing your products love.

If you’re not using your products or have to force yourself to put them on a rotation, you have way too many products. A good rule of thumb is to toss anything that you haven’t worn in the last three months. There’s no need to keep products that you aren’t loving or using.

You have duplicates.

Do you really need seven different lipsticks in the same shade? A good way to streamline your collection is to get rid of your dupes. Pick your favorite out of the fold. Stop creating excess by buying quality over quantity.

Downsizing your collection will ensure that you’re getting full use out of the products you love. In order to keep your collection streamlined, apply the one in, one out rule to make sure that you aren’t accumulating unnecessary products.
